Daily activities for the elderly provide stimulation and a sense of well-being, intrinsic to the high quality healthcare environment that is offered by all Healthcare Homes. We do not regard activities as an ‘add on’, but a fundamental part of our residents’ lifestyle.

The Activities Team

A designated Activities Team, headed by our Group Activities Manager, devote their time to providing quality activities in each of our homes, where a local Co-ordinator offers a varied programme of activities throughout the year.

Interests and Life Skills
We believe that residents’ lives should mirror the interests they had prior to coming into our care. Our Co-ordinators will provide activities linked to residents’ particular interests or life experiences. When familiar activities are experienced in a new environment, the settling in process is greatly assisted.

Our Activities Programme
Our varied programme stimulates the five senses and provides something for everyone’s taste. Weekly calendars, in-house newsletters and posters inform each resident when and where activities are taking place.

Variety
Variety is the name of the game and we encourage our residents to ask for a specific activity if it is not already on offer. Some of the activities we regularly provide are

Pamper Days
These personal care sessions, which may include a hand massage and manicure or a wash and set in the in-house Hair Salons, create a lovely feeling of well-being.

Music
Vocalists and musicians visit each home regularly and, where possible, residents are taken to concerts. ‘Sing-a-longs’ and weekly music quizzes such as ‘name that tune’ are also very popular.

Exercise
Keeping as fit as possible is very important as we grow older. We encourage our residents to attend the gentle and safe weekly exercise sessions. Relaxation therapy classes are also offered.

Reminiscence
Managed memories or reminiscence sessions are encouraged and enjoyed. Each home has a large resource library of books, postcards, laminated photographs, magazine articles and advertisements.

Arts and Crafts
On offer is water colour painting, collage with a variety of materials, stencil or rubber stamp work, glass or fabric painting, and appliqué or decoupage.

Poetry
Many of our residents enjoy the experience of reading or being read to. Each home has a resource library of poetry consisting of everything from Pam Ayres to Wordsworth.

Games and Quizzes
As well as encouraging social interaction and mental stimulation, games and quizzes are, quite simply, great fun. Carpet bowls and quoits are played regularly, as well as word games and quizzes. A variety of card games, jigsaw puzzles, dominoes, snakes and ladders, draughts and ludo, as well as good old bingo, are always on offer.

In-house Clubs

Film Clubs show a weekly film from our extensive libraries; the Knitting and Gardening Clubs provide areas of special interest, whilst the Sensory Gardens that we have created have been a resounding success.

The Art Programme
Local artists are approached to exhibit in our homes. This provides a changing art gallery for residents, enhances our interiors and allows our homes to be seen and appreciated by a wider section of the community with whom we encourage interaction.

Your Personal Choice
Activities are tailored and designed to benefit each individual. No one is expected to participate against their wishes, nor is their privacy compromised. Our aim is to help improve your quality of life and create a stimulating, friendly environment where each person has the capacity to contribute.
