Invite: A big helping of festivity at Home Meadow

With thousands of lonely Brits expected to face Christmas alone, Home Meadow residential home in Toft, Cambridgeshire, is doing its bit to throw open the doors and welcome guests for its seasonal celebrations. The home is hosting a Friends’ Festive Feast on Tuesday 19th December, and is inviting solitary members of the local community to join them.

Home Meadow residential home in Toft, has been running its own Friendship Lunches over the last few months, and is now extending a special invitation in time for the Christmas period.

The home, which is part of the Healthcare Homes Group, will stage a Friends’ Festive Feast, on Tuesday 19th December, as part of its determined effort to see more elderly members of the community enjoy a good seasonal get-together.

The residents also have a Christmas party on 21st December, and the home is also extending an invitation to local people living alone who may wish to join in.

Joe Ballard, Activities Coordinator, and recent finalist in the nationally run Dementia Care Awards, says the friendship lunch events have proven to his team that there are many elderly and lonely people in rural Cambridgeshire communities who are in danger of going through an entire Christmas without a shared festive meal.

“It’s very easy to get wrapped up in our own busy lives at this time of year and perhaps assume everyone has company, particularly if we’ve got plenty of friends and family to socialise with throughout the season,” he said.

“The stark reality is that for thousands of people throughout the country, the lovely image of a ‘turkey and trimmings’ meal, surrounded by friendly faces, just won’t happen.”

He added: “We’ve seen what a difference our Friendship Lunches at Home Meadow have made to people living in the Toft area, so we wanted to ensure that we put on something special for the Christmas period.

“Just getting out, sharing a meal with others, and having different surroundings and entertainment, can make all the difference in that person’s life.”

Home Meadow was joined by two other Healthcare Homes venues in launching their own friendship lunches earlier this year. They include Home Close residential home in Fulbourn and The Hillings in Eaton Socon, near St Neots.

All three of the homes provide residential services, including specialist dementia care.

Regional Manager for Healthcare Homes, George Catanescu said, “Loneliness is an awful thing for anyone to have to encounter, but its impact at this time of year can be heightened. As a group, we want to do as much as we can to ensure that our homes can become more of a facilitator in helping the community reduce the risk of isolation and loneliness.”
