Artificial Intelligence helps bring 102nd birthday fun to Reydon care home

6th December 2018

A resident at Oaklands House care home in Reydon near Southwold has celebrated her 102nd birthday, with a special musical treat.

Olive Bayford celebrated her 102 years on Tuesday 27th November, with a party surrounded by family, friends and fellow residents.

Olive is a music lover so the team at the home created a playlist on their Alexa device, with all of her favourite songs so that she can say “Alexa, play Olive’s playlist” and hear her much-loved classics, which include everything from ‘Welcome Home’ by Peters and Lee and ‘I have a dream’ by Westlife.

Olive was born in Cleavdon in Somerset on 27th November but official records state she was born on the 29th – a mix up that has caused confusion over the years! She went to the local Church of England school and is one of 8 siblings. Her earliest memory is the birth of her brother and she remembers looking excitedly through the Christmas pudding for the penny, and looking forward to opening her Christmas stocking.

Olive was a ‘secret reader’ when she was young. She wasn’t allowed to read at home, so used to sneakily read under the bedsheets; and is still a keen reader today, often found with a book in her lap.

Along with her musical playlist, the team at the home are providing her birthday wish of a massage. Staff also arranged for a cake in her favourite colours and flavour and her favourite drink – a snowball with a cherry.

Home Manager Hanro Steytler said, “It was such a pleasure to treat Olive to some of her favourite things for her birthday, especially her much-loved music.

“On behalf of everyone at Oaklands House, I would like to wish her a very happy birthday.”
