Our Home

Handford House is a home designed to provide comfortable, safe and accessible accommodation.  Services provided are nursing care and dementia nursing care.

All bedrooms have en-suite facilities; specialist bathing facilities are also available.  Residents, family and friends can enjoy wheelchair accessible gardens with two large patio areas, raised flower beds and seating.

Handford House has a large dedicated activities lounge with 98″ cinema screen and surround sound system to watch both classic films and sporting events.  A dedicated sensory room is available for use by residents who wish to relax and unwind.

Ipswich is a town steeped in history and you’d be hard pushed to move far in the town centre without seeing something worth stopping for.  Handford House is situated a half mile walk away from the town centre.

Ipswich is the oldest Anglo-Saxon town in England and has a rich heritage and proud history.  Suffolk’s county town was granted a Royal Charter in 1200 and has been closely linked with the discovery of the New World and with historical figures such as Cardinal Wolsey and Charles Dickens.

What are your interests outside of work/how do you unwind?

Reading, computers, music, watching MMA and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

What role did you carry out before you came to Healthcare Homes?

Senior Nurse/Clinical Lead in an 80 bed nursing and residential home and then in a 46 bed nursing and residential home

What do you think a person needs to do to be good in your role?

Be good at listening and communications; need to be firm, fair and calm. You need to be able to work to deadlines and be able to multi-task at the same time. To look out for the best interests of our residents, support the manager and be visible to everyone

What’s your favourite part of your working day and why?

Any time I spend with the residents. I enjoy working on the floor but also undertaking tasks that helps the home improve

What’s been your biggest professional challenge in your current role, or in your career to date?

Being part of a team that opened and commissioned an 80 ben nursing and residential home. This role taught me a lot about the background that goes in to a nursing home and helped me learn about all of the different roles within a care home.

What has been your biggest career highlight to date?

Attaining Deputy Manager role. I really enjoy the challenges I face in my role and learn constantly. I also spent time working towards attaining Gold Standard Framework in end of life care and this has made me passionate about palliative care and making sure we get it right every time.

What qualities do you think make you stand out?

Someone who is firm, fair and calm. An individual who is approachable and is able to lead.

What are your interests outside of work/how do you unwind?

I enjoy reading and writing. I also enjoy spending time with my son on Minecraft building and experimenting with Redstone. I also enjoy reading up on recent changes within the healthcare sector; I enjoy learning new things.

What do you enjoy/you looking forward to most about working at this care home?

I enjoy working with our residents; it always makes me happy when I see a resident improve and get better

I was a nursing home administrator for another company

What do you think a person needs to do to be good in your role?

People skills, common sense, patience and the ability to multi-task. Stay calm under pressure, be flexible and empathetic. Be understanding and have good listening skills. It helps to have a polite telephone manner too.

What’s been your biggest professional challenge in your current role, or in your career to date?

I commenced my role at Handford House when it was first built so I had to set everything up as there were no admin systems in place

What has been your biggest career highlight to date?

Receiving personal letters from relatives saying that I have helped or supported them whilst their loved one has been living in our home.

What qualities do you think make you stand out?

Very similar to those of being an administrator but with a lot of tact and being willing and able to take the pressures of management

What are your interests outside of work/how do you unwind?

I enjoy spending time with my family. I am a steward and worship leader at my local Church. I sing in charity concerts and usually perform a show each year with the Ipswich Gilbert and Sullivan Society. I enjoy going to the theatre, reading, walking and craft if time allows

What do you enjoy/you looking forward to most about working at this care home?

Being able to help people, meeting and getting to know such a wide variety of people; residents, visitors and staff

My favourite part of the day is on the morning when everyone is up and smiling

Hard working, always be there to help

I am a season ticket holder at Ipswich Football Club. I love going to the cinema

I look forward to going in to Handford House and seeing the residents smiling. We have a good team at Handford House.

You need to know how to communicate with others, organise events and weekly/daily activities; plan ahead, bring new ideas and listen to residents’ ideas

Making the residents smile and being happy they are taking part

Making sure all of my plans go ahead and making sure events are just how everybody envisaged them

What has been your biggest career highlight to date?

Making sure everyone has a really good time and seeing everyone smile

What qualities do you think make you stand out?

Having an open-door policy, a good communicator, raising staff morale with a happy face, getting involved with the residents, meeting and greeting all visitors and being there for everyone

What are your interests outside of work/how do you unwind?

I have two children so when time allows I like to spend time with them, going to the park or museum

What do you enjoy/you looking forward to most about working at this care home?

I enjoy my job very much, it allows me to spend quality time with individuals or groups. To be able to make a difference to peoples’ lives is very important to me
