Bedhampton couple celebrate 71 years of marriage

A resident couple at Bedhampton nursing home have just celebrated their 71^st wedding anniversary with the care team making the day extra special for them.

Ann and Peter Blenkinsopp, both 91 years young, moved into the Hampshire care home together just a few months ago. Due to their nursing needs they have separate rooms, but the care staff ensure they spend as much time together as possible, wheeling Peter into Ann’s room whenever their hearts desire.

Ann and Peter have shared their lives since the tender age of 20, and the care home decided to make their recent 71^st anniversary truly memorable. Bunting adorned their rooms, and they were presented with flowers, cards, and a beautiful cake prepared in the care home kitchen. Throughout the day, staff members and fellow residents dropped by to extend their warmest wishes.

But the pièce de résistance was a serenade by Calista, one of the carers, who sang a touching rendition of “Love One Another.” Later in the day, family and friends gathered around Ann and Peter.

Together, they celebrate a lifetime of love, a journey that began on a dance floor in Portsmouth and had taken them through the dance of life for 71 beautiful years.

Ann met Peter at a bustling dance hall, each attending with separate groups of friends. Peter, a handsome young man with a confident stride, had approached Ann with a simple question: “May I have this dance?”

Their courtship was swift, and in less than a year they exchanged vows in a beautiful ceremony at St. Mark’s Church in Portsmouth. Their wedding day had been, as Peter fondly recalled, a day without a hitch. Ann had walked down the aisle looking beautiful.

Over the years, they raised a daughter and a son who, in turn, gifted them with four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Ann and Peter inherited the family jewellery business from Ann’s grandfather and father, carrying the legacy forward with pride and dedication. Their lives were not all work, though – they enjoyed a lively social life, cherishing memories of dinner and, of course, dances with a multitude of friends. Ballroom dancing has always been a shared hobby.

Peter, in his youth, had been a formidable athlete, representing his county as a sprinter and earning a collection of medals. Ann was his anchor, his greatest supporter, and his most loyal fan.

As the years pass, Ann and Peter remain each other’s steadfast companions. Family always comes first and they take immense pride in their children and grandchildren.
