Bringing smiles and a sense of humour to their regular clients – along with the help and support to achieve great things – is the aim of every day for Manorcourt Homecare carers Ryan and Joe.
The pair, who currently work as a double-up team in Watton, are welcomed by all their clients and have received high praise from one who credits them with enabling her to take her first physical steps in months.
Ryan Girard, who has been a carer for 13 years, starting out working with people with learning disabilities and came to work for Manorcourt Homecare in 2014. Joe Chandler joined him as part of the team a year ago having done a number of different jobs including in the hospitality sector in the past and most recently five years as a scaffolder.
Joe said, “It’s a massive change in terms of working environment, which was very much male dominated in my last job. People were a bit shocked when I told them but I’m proud of myself for making such a big change.
“It’s a great job, very rewarding and fits in around family commitments. I would urge anyone thinking of trying a job in care to just go for it – I haven’t looked back.”
The pair enjoy working as a team, explained Ryan. “As a double up care team we always visit together. We often support people with physical difficulties who need two carers to come in to help. They may have mobility issues and need a physical hoist or perhaps a stand aid. We can visit each person up to four times a day, helping with personal care, preparing meals, and getting out and about when it is possible.
“I really enjoy helping people and making their day better – I know they all look forward to seeing us and when you are seeing someone regularly, you quickly build up a relationship and get to know them and their family well.”

One such client is Sharon Gatley who was bed bound for eight months before Joe and Ryan started to visit her regularly.
“I confess that I am your typical Ex- Nurse, “ she said, “I can be stubborn, and I always know best. Joe and Ryan have pushed me and nagged at me until I shuffled six steps which increased to 14 in a week and I have continued to make progress.
“These two lads have become my lifeline and I absolutely love seeing them every morning. They have so much care and empathy for their clients it is unreal, they are kind, caring , loving and so, so funny.
“My husband, daughter, even the two dogs and two cats cannot wait to see the pair of them – an absolute joy to have around.”
