Championing careers in care

Like many working in the care sector, we were intrigued to watch the programme Inside the Care Crisis with Ed Balls.

An ambitious attempt to cover the topic in just two one-hour episodes, the programme shone a much-needed spotlight on the sector and tried its best to draw out some of the issues currently facing carers, care homes, and home care.

We would however take issue with the observation made in the programme that there isn’t a clear career pathway for people joining the profession.

We recognise that this is a genuine challenge for smaller providers but a number of companies in the sector, including ourselves at Healthcare Homes, do provide genuine opportunities to develop a career in care.

At Healthcare Homes we offer a comprehensive learning and career roadmap. Building the knowledge and skills of our people not only enables career progression but also ensures that high standards of care and support are delivered to our residents and those using our services in the community.

Here are two members of our team who recently shared their career journeys – one at the beginning of their career and another, 20 years along the path.

This is Harrison, who works at Overbury House in Wroxham. He’s just passed his level 3 apprenticeship to qualify as a Lead Adult Care Worker – Level 3. We’re really happy for Harrison and proud of what he has achieved!

And here’s Chrissy, the newly appointed Deputy Manager at The Gables care home in Great Yarmouth.

Chrissy started at The Gables as a kitchen assistant 20 years ago before moving to a domestic role. When Chrissy showed real aptitude for care in her support role, her manager gave her the opportunity to start a new role as a care assistant. She progressed with study and training to a senior carer role, and today, as a deputy home manager, she guides each and every member of her team, ensuring they are consistently supported and that they too always have the opportunity to learn more.

People like Chrissy and Harrison are an inspiration to others starting out their careers at Healthcare Homes.
