Residents at Kingsmead Care Home in Swindon recently celebrated National Emergency Services Day with a special visit from local police officer, PC Jess Terrett. The event gave residents a unique chance to learn about the important work of emergency services in their community.
First, PC Jess spoke to residents about her role as a police officer. She explained how 999 services operate and how they help keep communities safe. She also shared the history of National Emergency Services Day and highlighted the dedication of police officers, paramedics, firefighters, and other emergency personnel.

Meanwhile, one resident, who had served as a police officer over 40 years ago, shared his experiences on the force. His stories prompted a discussion among residents about how policing has changed over time. In addition, residents asked questions and compared past and present policing methods.

After the talk, residents joined in several interactive activities. They tried on police hats, explored a police patrol car, and even sat in the driver’s seat to experience a day on duty- the home’s chef ended up in handcuffs while taking lunch orders.
Following the outdoor activities, residents returned indoors for a group discussion about the roles of different emergency services. The session then concluded with a quiz that tested residents’ knowledge and PC Jess’s familiarity with local services.
