Spring Roll making activity brings joy at The Malthouse

Residents at The Malthouse Residential Care Home in Gillingham recently enjoyed a lively afternoon of spring roll making, in an activity led by care team members Rattiya and Pat.

The idea came from a conversation among staff about trying something a bit different as part of the home’s regular activity programme. With a focus on simple, hands-on fun, the team planned a cooking session where residents could get involved, learn something new and enjoy a tasty treat at the end.

The afternoon started with a short demonstration from Rattiya, who showed everyone how to prepare and roll the spring rolls. Residents watched closely and asked questions, before having a go themselves with support from staff.

“Everyone took it at their own pace. Some were keen to get stuck in, others just enjoyed watching and chatting. There was no pressure – it was just for fun.” said Pat

With the ingredients prepared in advance, residents were soon filling, folding and rolling their own spring rolls.

“We had someone joking about making the biggest one and everyone just burst out laughing,” said Rattiya. “It’s lovely when something so simple brings people together like that.”

Once the spring rolls were cooked, they were passed around for everyone to try. Staff joined the residents to enjoy the food together.

The Malthouse runs a full programme of events and activities designed to support residents’ wellbeing and encourage engagement. These include creative workshops, music sessions, visits from local groups and regular opportunities to try something new.

“This wasn’t about cooking the perfect spring roll,” Rattiya added. “It was about being together, trying something different, and making the day a bit brighter. The team did a brilliant job, and the feedback from residents has been really positive.”

The home plans to build on the success of the session with more simple, shared activities that bring people together in a fun and informal way.

The Malthouse Residential Care Home would like to say a heartfelt thank you to Rattiya and Pat for taking time out of their busy days to prepare and deliver such a wonderful activity.
