Coping with Christmas when you are caring for someone living with dementia

Christmas is a magical time of the year when families come together to celebrate and create cherished memories.

However, for those caring for someone living with dementia, the festive season can bring both joy and challenges. But, with some thoughtful planning and understanding, you can make the time special for everyone.  Here’s some simple and friendly tips to help you cope.

Keep it simple: Lots of activity and complex arrangements can be overwhelming so, simplify your plans. Instead of a big, elaborate feast, opt for a smaller, quieter gathering. Decorations can be simpler, too – a few twinkling lights and some festive music can create a lovely atmosphere without being overwhelming.

Create familiarity: People living with dementia often find comfort in routine and familiar surroundings. To make Christmas more enjoyable, decorate your home with familiar items and ornaments that they may remember from the past. This can help trigger positive memories and create a sense of belonging.

Plan a calm environment: Christmas can get noisy and chaotic, which might be distressing for some. Designate a quiet space where they can retreat to if they need a break. Ensure this space is comfortable and filled with soothing things, like soft blankets and their favourite chair.

Involve them in preparations: Engage everyone in preparations to help them feel included. They can help with simple tasks like wrapping gifts, stirring cookie dough, or setting the table. These activities can provide a sense of purpose and accomplishment.

Stick to a routine: Try to maintain a daily routine as much as possible during the festive season. Consistency can reduce confusion and anxiety. If you need to make changes, introduce them gradually.

Share memories: Encourage conversations about past holidays and cherished memories. Looking through old photo albums or sharing stories can be a wonderful way to connect and relive happy moments.

Be flexible: Remember that not everything will go as planned, and that’s okay. Be flexible and willing to adapt. If it’s a particularly challenging day, it’s okay to adjust your plans or expectations to accommodate their needs.

Avoid overstimulation: Limit the number of visitors and activities on any day. Too many people and events can be overwhelming. Keep it simple and focus on quality time together.

Choose sensory-friendly gifts: When selecting gifts consider items that engage the senses in a gentle way. Soft blankets, scented candles, or soothing music can be great choices.

Self-care: Caring for someone living with dementia can be emotionally and physically draining. Don’t forget to take care of yourself. Ask for help from family and friends, and make time for self-care activities to recharge your energy.

Caring for someone living with dementia over the festive period can be challenging, but it’s also an opportunity to create meaningful moments and strengthen your bond. By keeping things simple, maintaining routines, and showing understanding and patience, you can make Christmas a special time for everyone. Remember that it’s the love and connection that matter most during this festive season.
