A big welcome to Avon Lodge’s new manager

Healthcare Homes is pleased to announce the appointment of Eugenia Skliar as the new manager of Avon Lodge in Kingsland, Bristol.

Eugenia has over 30 years’ care sector experience and a background in medicine.  She started her care career as a Rehabilitation Unit Manager at St Thomas’ Hospital in London, which catered mostly for those needing post-operative recovery.

She then became a Care Manager for people with learning disabilities, followed by five years as Head of Operations for a nationwide care company.

“I am very passionate about my work,” Eugenia explained.  “I applied to Avon Lodge because I wanted to work close to my home in Fishponds.  What impressed me about the home and the company that owns it – Healthcare Homes – is its reputation in the sector and its commitment to innovation.  That’s very important for me – and for my residents.”

The innovations that Eugenia will bring to Avon Lodge include the creation of a Memory Lane that stimulates and engages residents with dementia.  “At a home I ran in Lincoln, we got hold of photos of Hunstanton (one of the local, large seaside resorts), blew them up to enormous pictures and papered the walls with them.  It was very emotional when you saw residents recognising the places pictured and reminiscing about holidays there as children and with their families.”

The plan is to create something similar at Avon Lodge.  Eugenia has already obtained some old photos of Bristol and plans to work the same magic.

“We will also create a dementia-friendly garden with raised beds and sensory rich plantings producing a wide variety of smells and textures.”

Avon Lodge is located on Southey Avenue in Kingswood, Bristol.  For more information on the range of services provided, visit the home’s webpage or call 01179 474370.  To find out about current job vacancies at Avon Lodge, visit our careers website.
