Norwich carers set to pedal 100 miles for Captain Sir Tom

A team of carers at the Norwich branch of Manorcourt Homecare is set to cycle the length and breadth of the city to support the Captain Sir Tom 100 Challenge.

The team, which provides support to people in their own homes across Bowthorpe, Costessey, City, Taverham, Drayton, Easton and surrounding villages, will be joining nationwide efforts to mark the 101st birthday of Captain Sir Tom Moore. Sir Tom raised an incredible £38.9 million for the NHS Covid-19 appeal after completing 100 laps of his garden at the age of 100.

Having worked closely with the NHS throughout the pandemic, in efforts to support and protect service users, the team at Manorcourt Homecare is now planning to visit every client in Norwich by a specially adapted bike and trailer, with a small token of thanks for supporting them throughout the national emergency.

The bike and trailer has been commissioned, on which team members will take turns to visit each of the 75 clients across the city, covering a minimum of 100 miles. Long Stratton-based Café Savannah has donated cupcakes to be delivered as part of the gift packages, and clients outside of the city will receive theirs in the coming weeks.

The team’s cycling efforts will take place between Friday 30th April and Monday 3rd May in line with the national campaign to take on a challenge based on the number 100 over Sir Tom’s birthday weekend.  They will be encouraging donations to their fundraising page, which will support the Captain Tom Foundation.

Anne-Marie Brown, Branch Manager of Manorcourt Homecare Norwich, said: “The last year has been challenging in ways we could never have imagined, but the sense of community and solidarity we have experienced has been humbling and, at times, overwhelming. Sir Tom embodies this wonderful community ethos and we’re so proud to be supporting his legacy.

“Our staff have worked tirelessly to continue our services which are crucial to our clients.  There have been challenges along the way as staff have faced isolation or family struggles and our service users have supported us as we adapted our services and did everything possible to keep them safe.

“This is our way to say thank you to our clients but also to give back to the wonderful NHS that has been the bedrock of our communities throughout the pandemic.

“Do please look out for our staff on our specially branded bike and trailer as we make our way around the city, and give them encouragement when you see them.  This is a big challenge for us but one we’re keen to take on in our efforts to say thank you.”

The team aims to raise £1,000 and donations can be made at https://gofund.me/6fbb59c4
