What is the Care Quality Commission?

The Care Quality Commission, commonly known as the CQC, is an independent body responsible for overseeing and regulating health and social care services in England.

Established in 2009 under the Health and Social Care Act, the CQC’s primary mission is to ensure that health and social care providers like Healthcare Homes deliver services that are safe, effective, compassionate, and of high quality.

Friendly engagement

Approaching its role with a friendly demeanor, the CQC recognises the value of empathy and understanding in the world of healthcare. They engage with service users, their families, and care providers in a respectful manner, encouraging open communication and active involvement in the improvement of services

Empowering the public

The CQC empowers the public by providing transparent information about the quality of care services. Their comprehensive inspection reports and ratings help individuals make informed decisions about their healthcare choices. Whether it’s choosing a hospital, a care home for a loved one, or a general practitioner, the CQC’s authoritative assessments allow people to have confidence in their choices.

Rigorous inspections

Behind the friendly approach lies a robust inspection process. The CQC carries out inspections across various health and social care settings, including hospitals, care homes, dental practices, and more. Trained inspectors, comprising a mix of healthcare professionals and members of the public, thoroughly assess each service.

During these inspections, the CQC looks into five key areas and a rating is given for each area.

  • Safety: Ensuring that service users are protected from harm and risks.
  • Effectiveness: Evaluating the impact of care and treatment on patients’ health and wellbeing.
  • Caring: Assessing the compassion, dignity, and respect with which care is delivered.
  • Responsiveness: Examining how well services cater to the individual needs of users.
  • Well-led: Reviewing the leadership and governance of care providers

Taking action and promoting improvement

The CQC doesn’t stop at inspecting and evaluating. Where necessary, they take enforcement action to address any identified issues and ensure improvements are made promptly

 Collaboration with partners

The CQC works closely with providers, government bodies, and advocacy groups to gain a holistic understanding of the challenges and developments in health and social care.
