Uvedale Hall Brings a Clothes Shop and Choice to Residents

Uvedale Hall residents enjoy choosing clothes at a pop-up shop brought to the care home.

Residents at Uvedale Hall in Needham Market enjoyed a special shopping experience when a pop-up clothes shop came to the home, giving them the opportunity to browse, choose and buy clothes for themselves.

At Healthcare Homes, choice and independence are important parts of everyday life for the people we care for. Moving into a care home should not mean losing the opportunity to make personal decisions, however small they may seem.

For the residents at Uvedale Hall, this recently meant having the chance to choose their own clothes without having to travel into town.

Bringing the shop to the residents

For many people, choosing what to wear is a simple part of everyday life. We can visit the shops, browse different styles and colours and pick something that reflects our own personality and taste.

For older people living in a care home, opportunities to go clothes shopping can be more difficult.

The team at Uvedale Hall wanted to make sure residents could still enjoy the experience of shopping for themselves, so a pop-up clothes shop was arranged within the home.

Residents were able to browse the rails at their own pace, look through different styles and colours and choose the items they liked. Staff were available to provide support where needed, while residents remained at the heart of the decision-making.

The importance of everyday choice

Being able to choose a new outfit may seem like a small thing, but everyday choices play an important role in maintaining independence, dignity and individuality.

Whether it is deciding what to wear, choosing a favourite meal or deciding how to spend the afternoon, having a say in daily life helps residents retain a sense of control and continue to express who they are.

The pop-up shop provided an opportunity for residents to make those choices for themselves, while also enjoying an activity that was familiar and enjoyable.

For some residents, it may also have brought back memories of shopping trips throughout their lives – choosing clothes for a special occasion, treating themselves to something new or simply enjoying a browse around the shops.

Creating opportunities for residents to enjoy familiar experiences is an important part of supporting wellbeing in our care homes. Activities do not always need to be complicated. Sometimes, it is the everyday things- such as having the opportunity to choose your own clothes.
