Residents from The Malthouse care home enjoyed a day trip to Wells Cathedral as part of the home’s regular programme of organised outings.
These trips give residents the chance to spend time outside the home, visit places of interest, and enjoy time together in a different setting.
Staff said the journey to Wells was relaxed, with residents chatting and looking forward to the visit during the minibus ride.
Exploring Wells Cathedral
Once inside Wells Cathedral, residents spent time walking through the historic building and admiring its architecture. They looked closely at the detailed stonework, the high arches, and the colourful stained-glass windows.
Some residents chose to sit quietly and enjoy the peaceful surroundings, while others explored different areas of the cathedral at their own pace.
Several people commented on the impressive scale of the building. They said seeing the cathedral in person felt very different from viewing photographs.
During the visit, one resident shared a personal memory that the cathedral atmosphere brought back.
It reminded her of watching her grandson perform in choirs when he was younger.
She explained that he received a choral scholarship at Winchester College and later sang at Millfield School.
She also recalled that he had been selected as one of four young singers to perform for the BBC.
Enjoying the Cathedral Grounds
After exploring the cathedral, the group spent time walking around the surrounding grounds.
The pleasant weather allowed residents to enjoy some fresh air before returning to the minibus for the journey back to Gillingham, Dorset.

Staff at The Malthouse say outings like this are an important part of the home’s activities programme. They provide a change of environment and help residents stay connected with local places and communities.
Trips also give residents opportunities to share experiences, talk with one another, and create new memories together.
