Residents cool off with wheelchair wash during hot weather

With hot weather continuing across Swaffham, staff at Meadow House created a simple outdoor activity to help residents stay cool. The team set up a rainbow-shaped sprinkler arch in the garden and organised a wheelchair wash for residents.

Water sprayed through the arch as residents were guided through in their wheelchairs. Some residents chose to go through the sprinkler more than once.

Others spent time in shaded seating areas before joining in when they were ready.  Staff adjusted the pace throughout the afternoon so everyone could take part comfortably.

The activity took place during the warmest part of the day, giving residents a chance to cool down while still enjoying time outdoors.

Staff positioned towels and seating nearby so residents could be dried off or rest between turns. The garden area remained open for much of the afternoon, with residents moving between the sprinkler, seating areas, and shaded spots.

The wheelchair wash formed part of Meadow House’s wider activities programme, which changes throughout the year to reflect seasons and residents’ interests.

Meadow House, on Norwich Road in Swaffham, provides residential and nursing care, along with respite and palliative support. The home also supports younger adults with disabilities and people living with multiple sclerosis.

The purpose-built, single-storey home offers accessible gardens and communal spaces designed to support movement and outdoor activity.
