A resident staying on respite at Beaumont Park Care Home in Biggleswade has been sharing memories from one of the most significant moments in modern British history- escorting Queen Elizabeth II during her accession to the throne.

Gerald Hayes, 93, is currently enjoying a short stay at Beaumont Park Care Home in Biggleswade. During his time at the home, he has spoken with residents and staff about his service as a Military Policeman during National Service.

A First-Hand Role in Royal History

In 1952, aged just 20, Gerald served in Kenya when news broke of the death of King George VI.

At the time, Princess Elizabeth was staying at the Treetops Hotel.

It was there that she learned she had become The Queen.

Soon afterwards, officers selected Gerald as part of a group of 16 Military Police motorcyclists. Their task was to escort the newly crowned Queen to the RAF airfield at Eastleigh, near Nairobi.

The 70-mile journey took place during a tense period. At the time, unrest linked to the early stages of the Mau Mau uprising had begun to develop in the region. Despite the situation, Gerald and his colleagues carried out their duties with care and discipline.

Reflecting on the moment, Gerald said there was a strong sense of responsibility among the officers involved. He also recalled a feeling that the journey would later be remembered as an important part of history.

More information about Queen Elizabeth II’s accession can be found on the Royal Family website.
