Christmas Cheer at Albany Care Home

On Saturday, 30th November, Albany Care Home hosted its annual Christmas Fair, a delightful event that brought together residents, staff, families, and the local community to celebrate the festive season.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly Santa’s Grotto, where children eagerly lined up to meet Santa, played by staff member Terry, with resident Audrey as his cheerful elf. The sparkling grotto was filled with magic as children received small toys or books as gifts, leaving with wide smiles and festive excitement.

Guests enjoyed a variety of stalls and activities that offered something for everyone. Alan and Jean, two long-time friends of the home, managed the raffle and lucky dip with enthusiasm, drawing plenty of attention. Jean also oversaw the “Guess the Name of the Crocodile” game, which added a fun twist to the day. Sue, whose mother Valerie is a resident, worked tirelessly on the books, toys, and games stall, featuring a wonderful collection of items donated by the local community.

The handmade Christmas gifts, created by residents in the weeks leading up to the fair, were a standout success. These included pom-pom hedgehogs, painted pinecones, hand-sewn paper birds, and other beautifully crafted items. Visitors were impressed by the creativity and quality of the gifts, and most were sold by the end of the day.

No Christmas fair would be complete without delicious treats, and Chef Marek delivered in style. Guests were treated to cakes, mince pies, and mulled wine, served by Hilary and John, relatives of resident Clive. The warm and festive refreshments added to the joy of the event.

Local businesses, including Sainsbury’s, Tesco, and The Birthday Shop, generously donated raffle prizes, which included chocolates, wine, and a large teddy bear. These contributions, combined with the enthusiasm of volunteers, made the raffle one of the day’s most popular attractions.
The event received glowing feedback from attendees. Local resident Thelma was particularly impressed by the handmade gifts, purchasing several as presents for her family and friends. A young boy’s excited shout of “Hello Santa! I’ve been good!” added a moment of pure delight. Guests also praised the mulled wine and cakes, noting the warm and festive atmosphere throughout the day.

The Albany Christmas Fair was a wonderful success, showcasing the residents’ creativity, the staff’s dedication, and the strong sense of community that defines the care home. It was a day filled with laughter, connection, and the true spirit of the holidays.
