Alexandra Care Home in Hemel Hempstead was filled with joy and pride as Joyce Smith MBE, a truly remarkable resident and celebrated athlete, received a surprise gift from British Olympic champion Sir Mo Farah. In an intimate ceremony, attended by Joyce’s husband and daughter, she was presented with a signed photo and a handwritten letter from the legendary runner himself.
Joyce, who made history by breaking the world record for the 3000 meters in 1971 and winning the London Marathon twice, was visibly touched by Sir Mo’s heartfelt message: “Thank you for being the one who showed us it could be done. Congratulations on a wonderful career.”
Her extraordinary journey began in the 1950s and includes numerous impressive achievements, such as winning gold at the 1972 International Cross Country Championships, setting multiple British records, and representing Great Britain at the Munich and Los Angeles Olympics. Joyce’s groundbreaking performance at the 1981 London Marathon, where she became the first British woman to run under 2:30, remains a significant milestone in British athletics.
Gina, Home Manager at Alexandra Care Home, shared, “It was a privilege to present Joyce with Sir Mo’s message. Having her family by her side during this special moment made it even more meaningful, highlighting not only her immense impact on athletics but the deep affection those around her have for her.”
Appointed an MBE in 1984 for her contributions to athletics, Joyce’s story is one of perseverance and triumph. Her inspiring legacy continues to motivate both residents and staff at Alexandra Care Home, a place that celebrates the unique stories of its residents.
We are proud to honour Joyce’s achievements and grateful for the chance to share her remarkable journey with everyone who visits our care home. To learn more about Joyce’s impressive career, visit her Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joyce_Smith
