Residents at The Old Vicarage care home in Leigh, near Sherborne, are enjoying the arrival of spring in the home’s gardens. The outdoor spaces play an important role in daily life at the home, giving residents a peaceful place to walk, socialise and relax.
The gardens surround the historic country house and offer views across the Dorset countryside. They remain a popular spot for residents throughout the year.
Improvements to The Old Vicarage Care Home Gardens
Bob, the home’s gardener, maintains the gardens and regularly looks for ways to improve them for residents. Over the winter months he completed several projects to make the space easier to use.
First, he replaced the gravel around the pond with new paving. This change makes the area safer and easier for residents to access.
In addition, he improved a pergola walkway that leads onto one of the lawns. The space now provides a comfortable area where residents can sit with visitors.

Bob is also working on another pathway around the rose garden. This project will make the garden accessible to more residents.
Staff and residents value Bob’s work and appreciate the care he puts into the gardens. He also enjoys stopping for a chat with residents while he works.
Nature and Wellbeing at The Old Vicarage
Spending time outdoors offers many benefits for physical and emotional wellbeing. Residents at The Old Vicarage often walk through the gardens, sit with refreshments or spend time talking with friends and staff.

At this time of year the gardens are full of colour. Daffodils, bluebells, anemones and daphne plants now bloom across the grounds. Meanwhile, the pond has become another focal point. Two new fountains run alongside colourful fish, while resident moorhens are already building their nest for the season.
A Garden at the Heart of the Community
The gardens host many events and activities throughout the year. Residents regularly take part in gardening sessions and outdoor activities. The space also provides the perfect setting for summer parties and visits from the local ice cream van.

In addition, The Old Vicarage opened its gardens last year as part of the St Margaret’s Hospice Glorious Gardens scheme, helping to raise money for the charity.
Residents and staff look forward to another year of enjoying the gardens together, as the seasons change and the outdoor spaces continue to grow and develop.
